Stodola's Law of the Ellipse

This app calculates Stodola‘s Cone Law (also known as "The Law of the Ellipse") for turbomachinery.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Aurel Stodola (1859 – 1942) discovered the relationship between inlet pressure, outlet pressure and mass flow in steam turbines for various operating conditions.

Today, this law is fundamental for calculation and control of turbines.

With this app you can determine the type (axial, diagonal, radial) of your compressor, pump, fan, turbine or mill. Calculate the diameter based on volume flow, specific enthalpy and speed or use the backwards calculation to calculate volume flow or speed at a given geometry.


Every calculation is based on the optimized relationship between specific speed and specific diameter. You will be warned if your boundary conditions leave this path.

The simplest way of turbine calculation

„STuC – Steam Turbine Calculator“ calculates the expansion of saturated or superheated steam of a straight condensing or backpressure turbine acc. the IAPWS water steam table. 


You can easily edit the boundary conditions by the app sliders or direct as value. For each calculation inlet pressure, inlet temperature and exhaust pressure are mandatory. One of the three parameters mass flow, efficiency or power can be calculated. You can switch between these three parameters.


The following sizes are additional calculated for inlet and exhaust: enthalpy, entropy, superheating respectively steam content, specific volume and volumetric flow.

AIRExpander calculates the expansion of dry standard air for all kind of turbo expanders


You can easily edit the boundary conditions by the app sliders. For each calculation inlet pressure, inlet temperature and exhaust pressure are mandatory. One of the three parameters mass flow, efficiency or power can be calculated. You can switch between these three parameters.

WSCycle allows a quick water-steam cycle calculation of steam boiler, turbine, condenser, pump and generator. Easily change the boundary conditions via slider and all components will be recalculated simultaneously to give you an overview of all relevant output values.
